We have made tremendous progress on our back yard. The sod is finally in and yesterday we spent most of the day putting in a play area for the girls. It is not quite finished yet, but they are certainly excited about the possibilities it holds. We finished moving all of the rock in last weekend. What a job! The muscles in my arm have surely grown an inch. After getting the rock in, we started working on raking the yard and making sure the final grade of it was smooth. We spent the rest of the day working on that and by 6 pm we were pooped. Then Ralph Siler, a friend of Chris’ from our ward, called and asked if we wanted his leftover sod. Can’t really say that he asked, mind you, he just said he was bringing it over. Good thing we started the raking early so we were prepared.
We called and had the rest of the sod delivered last Monday. Chris took a couple of hours off and we went to work again. Around 7:30 when it was started to get dark, Chris called and had his friend Jamie come help and Ralph showed up about an hour later as I was putting the girls to bed. But it looks so great now. The temptation to play on it is great, but we try to limit the amount of time the girls are on it.
Yesterday, we had some squeegie delivered. It is a small rock that works well in play areas for kids. Amy got to sit up on the tractor (borrowed from Ralph) and help Chris drive and dump the loads. It was the best part of her day. Even though we spent the better part of the day working on things for the kids, it wasn’t really projects that they could help with and by the end of the day, Chris and I both felt that they were feeling rejected. We decided to go out to dinner and then let them play at the mall for awhile. It seemed to do the trick and they were happy and loving us again.
Sunday mornings (and most mornings) we have tried to drill into the girls’ heads that they need to sleep–mostly because we want to sleep in. I don’t get up at 5:15 am to exercise on Sunday, yet I was getting frustrated when Misha was waking up at 6 or 6:30. This morning after hearing them up around 7:30, I got up to hear Misha saying, “Quick, get on your bed.” They are getting really good about staying in their rooms.
The girls finished their session of swimming lessons. They both excelled and are doing so well. Misha jumped off the diving board for the first time by herself. The first two times, one of the instructors stood on the board with her and picked her up by her life jacket and dumped her in. The third time, she made the jump all by herself. I was so proud of her. She is also brave enough to go in to the river with Amy. At the beginning of the session eight weeks ago, she was far too afraid. Amy is quite brave and even does the floating logs all by herself. She took about five minutes the first time to get across. I told her she couldn’t do them anymore if she was going to take so long, because everyone else in line behind her had to wait. That seemed to motivate her. Now if she falls off the first or second log, she just swims to the edge, climbs out of the pool and gets back in line.
Both girls will have a session of dance classes this month. I had originally planned to put Misha into a gymnastics class, but all the sessions were full. Should be fun to see how they do.
Chris’ sister, Lori, had to leave her mission in Argentina early. She has a lot of health problems and was in constant pain. Combine that with a lack of sleep and the potential for permanent bone fusions, and all concerned felt it was best that she should come home now. She arrived last Saturday and then promptly flew up to her Aunt Lori’s ranch in Northern Alberta where Chris’ parents were vacationing, for some rest and relaxation.
Chris started another teaching session at University of Phoenix. His class is a lot larger this time so he has spent time reworking the curriculum and assignments so that the load on him wasn’t so great. He has another session that will begin in October at the Westminster site which will be a lot closer to home.
